Darwin, Australia, September 10, 2023

In a significant academic endeavor, Nurul Rahmah Desilia, a graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Graduate Program in Disaster Science at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), has successfully concluded a two-week Research Attachment program at Charles Darwin University (CDU) in Darwin, Australia. The visit aimed to deepen her understanding of disaster emergency management and contribute to collaborative research activities with renowned professors at CDU.

During her visit, Nurul collaborated with Dr. Rina Suryani Oktari (Head of the Graduate Program in Disaster Science at USK) and Dr. Jonatan Lassa from CDU on a research project evaluating the integration model of disaster education into the Merdeka curriculum at the elementary school level in Indonesia. Their joint efforts resulted in the publication of a scoping review journal titled “Integrating Disaster Education into School Curriculum in Indonesia.”

Nurul also attended a series of lectures at CDU covering essential topics in disaster management, such as disaster recovery, decision-making in emergency situations, and concepts and practices of disaster resilience according to the Sendai Framework.

In addition to academic pursuits, Nurul explored local attractions, including a visit to the Museum and Art Gallery Northern Territory, where she gained insights into the community’s recovery from the devastating Cyclone Tracy in 1974-1975. She also had the opportunity to participate in international classes and seminars, providing her with valuable insights into various themes related to disaster management.

As part of her visit, Nurul met with Ms. Ghina Fadilla, the representative of the Indonesian Consulate in Darwin. Discussions centered on potential collaborations between CDU and USK, with strong support from the consulate for future cooperation. Nurul also participated in discussions about the Split Master collaboration between the Graduate Program in Disaster Science at Universitas Syiah Kuala and Charles Darwin University, aiming for realization in 2024.

This visit marks a crucial step in Nurul Rahmah Desilia’s academic development and strengthens the ties between Indonesia and Australia in the context of disaster management. It is expected that this valuable experience will significantly contribute to her thesis on disaster management, serving as a foundation for a deeper understanding of emergency and disaster management.
