USK Leads Global GADRRRES Survey in Aceh to Mark 20th years of 2004 Tsunami
Banda Aceh, September 11, 2024 – The Graduate Program in Disaster Science at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), in collaboration with the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), successfully held a workshop on implementing the Comprehensive School Safety Framework (CSSF) 2022-2030 for the Aceh province. The workshop took place in the Teleconference Room of the USK Graduate School.
“This workshop is part of the data collection for the Global Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in the Education Sector (GADRRRES) survey conducted globally and nationally. Indonesia has selected 12 provinces for this survey, one of which is Aceh,” said Dr. Rina Suryani Oktari, the survey’s coordinator and Deputy Dean III of the USK Faculty of Medicine.
The event was attended by key agencies in Aceh involved in education, disaster mitigation, and regional development planning. Among the attendees were the Aceh Dayah Education Office, the Aceh Quality Improvement Agency (BPMB), the Banda Aceh Education and Culture Office (DISDIKBUD), GEN-A (Generation of Aceh), the Aceh Education Office, the Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBA), BAPPEDA Aceh, the Aceh Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (Forum PRB), and the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religion (Kanwil Kemenag) of Aceh. Dr. Yunita Idris, Coordinator of the USK Graduate Program in Disaster Science, also delivered a welcome speech.
The workshop aimed to strengthen the implementation of CSSF 2022-2030, focusing on enhancing school safety and resilience to disasters. The GADRRRES survey data is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of school preparedness in Aceh for disaster risks and to promote policies that support sustainable development in education and disaster mitigation. This workshop also forms part of the assessment for the 20-year commemoration of the tsunami, with a specific focus on preparedness.
The workshop also provided a platform for agencies to exchange experiences and share best practices in implementing school safety frameworks. The outcomes are anticipated to guide the development of more effective disaster risk mitigation programs in Aceh.
